BI on crime statistics

Business Requirements

A government organization approached us to analyze crime data and identify correlations and trends. Their goal was to gain insights into crime patterns based on pin codes. We were tasked with sourcing publicly available data and performing visual analysis on it.

Nuage Solution

We got access to the following data:

  1. Pin code level crime data
    1. For the period Jan 1995 – Dec 2016
    2. Covers 21 offence categories
    3. These are split into 62 subcategories
  2. Local Governing Areas (LGA) ranking data
    1. For the period 2012-2016
    2. For 27 offence category / sub-category combinations
  3. Court Data
    1. For the period 2012-12016
    2. Data by crime category on
      1. Number of cases brought to trail
      2. Number of convictions
      3. Number of appeals
      4. Delay in days
  4. Domestic violence data
    1. By offence
      1. By premise type
      2. By offender age group
      3. By victim age group
      4. By LGA
      5. By relationship
      6. By time of day (e.g., Sunday – between 6AM and 12 Noon)

To perform the analysis, we loaded the data into an AWS data lake and utilized AWS Athena for data transformation. Microsoft BI was employed for the subsequent analysis and visualization of the data. Our data scientists conducted correlation analysis, which yielded interesting trends that were shared with the government department. Additionally, we provided them with the necessary platform to conduct further analysis on their own.

As a subsequent requirement, we integrated Alexa into the solution. This allowed users to verbally communicate their queries and receive the results audibly, enhancing the accessibility and user experience of the platform.
