Digital Transformation is one of the most over-used terms today.

From an Information Technology perspective, what does it mean?

Is it a catch-all phrase for new IT projects?

Is it another name for modernization?

Is it updating the existing Applications and moving them from on-prem to cloud?

No. No and No.

From a technologists’ perspective, Digital Transformation is all about using Digital Technologies to support enhanced customer intimacy and improving efficiency. It is not just about technology. The technology provides the possibility. It needs to be coupled with business transformation (hence the word!) and re-orientation of human resources to optimally use the digital technologies to get closer to the customer and improve operational efficiency.

Based on our experience of working with various organizations, the key building blocks of digital transformation using technology for most organizations would be:

  • Include digital transformation into the business strategy – what should the business achieve and over what period of time? This will feed into the technology project plan.
  • Leverage internal expertise supported by external consultants – Identify key internal resources who are up for transformation and who also know what works and what doesn’t. Create a common ONE team of internal business process experts, IT experts and external consultants.
  • Focus on the customer experience – how to gain customer intimacy and efficiency in customer interactions should be one of the primary goals of the transformation. For example, moving from a customer center tech platform that requires the agent to open multiple Apps to one where all data is available at one click – saves time and reduces angst all around.
  • Agility – decide quickly and change fast. This is one of the most critical factors in digital transformation. With the plethora of technologies and the quantum of customization available, the journey to digital transformation has lots of twists and turns. It’s easy to get lost in the direction of the journey is not checked frequently. Take a decision – on technology/vendor/ solution quickly, make minimal customizations and test. Learn and repeat. This minimizes costly mistakes and also has the added benefit of showing results quickly.
