Hurricane Spend Tracking
Business Requirement
A Washington DC-based NGO required a data portal to visualize and provide insights into the government spending on Hurricane Harvey.
The aim was to allow the general public and researchers to easily understand the following information:
a. Who spent the money (which Agency/Department)?
b. Who received the money?
c. What was it spent upon?
d. Where was it spent?
Nuage Solution
Nuage developed a data portal to visualize and provide insights into the government spending on Hurricane Harvey. The portal aimed to address the information needs of the general public and researchers by answering key questions regarding the spending. The spending data, obtained from the USA spending website, underwent ingestion, cleansing, and transformation processes within an AWS environment. The resulting data was then visualized and made publicly accessible through the portal.
The portal’s homepage featured clickable Sankey diagrams that provided a summary of the spending categorized into contracts and assistance. Additionally, the portal included separate pages for each Agency, Department, Contractors, and types of assistance, allowing users to explore the spending information in detail. To protect privacy, the names of individual grant and loan recipients were withheld from the site.
To facilitate user-friendly access to the data, the portal offered both a simple search and a power search function. The simple search enabled users to find relevant information based on keywords or categories, while the power search allowed for more in-depth data exploration. Furthermore, the power search function allowed users to download the search results for offline analysis.
