Migrating On-Prem Window workload and VDI to AWS
Business Requirements
The US-based professional contracting and petroleum industry client wanted to migrate OnPrem infrastructure and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to AWS servers and Amazon Workspaces.
Nuage Solution
Our AWS Architect designed the approach to migrate to AWS over a minimum timescale. The key features of the approach were:
- Re-architect and segregate servers to multiple EC2 instances
- Load balance the server environment
- Security including SSO using Microsoft AD
- Multi-platform accessibility – PC – any OS, Tablet, Smartphone
- No downtime during the migration
- Ensure no data loss
- Increased Stability
- Lower infrastructure management effort
We rearchitected & segregated their on-prem window server to multiple EC2 instances with separate Application and Database tier. On EC2 instances, we had set up and installed the Sage HRMS server, SAGE 100 server, Sage Crystal 2011 on the Application Server, and SQL Server (Web Edition) on the Database server. ELB Load balancers were set-up to ensure High Availability.
A Security first approach was followed by using custom rules in security groups and subnets in the combination with NAT gateway to have a high level of security. We also set up Microsoft Active Directory which was used in setting up Group object policy and RDP policy.
Once the servers were set-up, the desktops were migrated to Amazon Workspaces. We used Amazon Workspaces Application Manager to automate the task of completing the VDI migration including all existing applications (Like Office 365, Firefox, Chrome, On-Prem Printer driver) and file setting. The auto start/stop was set to reduce costs during non-working hours.
The Migration of full network share drive data from on-premises was another challenge for which our team used S3 Transfer acceleration with multi-part upload to transfer huge data to the AWS S3 and then AWS FSX. PowerShell script was installed on all servers and workspaces to map FSx network driving using WAM.
Moving from the legacy architecture to this state-of-the-art cloud-based solution has allowed the cloud to provide better scalability and quality of service while reducing costs – both operational and management.
