Is GDPR A Four-Letter Word?
by Piyush Rakhecha in General
GDPR is just the start. After Europe, half the world is moving towards creating privacy rights legislation. California has just enacted its own privacy law – The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018. Other major economies like India, Australia are in the process of getting there. These laws are set to dramatically change how businesses handle data. Companies that store large amounts of personal information — including major players like Google and Facebook — are / will be required to disclose the types of data they collect, as well as allow consumers to opt out of having their data sold. Even small companies that store information about customers will be required to follow these laws.
So how can technology help?
We recently did a gap analysis for a global company to identify what policies were in existence, what was the awareness around them, what was the awareness level around the data held and the GDPR implications. We identified geography specific issues and provided the organization with a roadmap of the journey required to become compliant.
This is just the start point, once the organization becomes aware, the next step is to put the technology solutions and the business processes in place to be legally compliant.
